Chinese Zodiac Compatibility After Dark
Which Chinese zodiac signs spark and which collide once the lights are low? The classic teams, partner pairs, clashes and peach blossom, told for fun.
Last updated: Oct 8, 2026
The short version
- Signs four years apart form a team and are read as easy chemistry.
- Signs six years apart sit opposite each other: sparks first, friction later.
- Your zodiac year is one of eight characters in a full chart. For bedroom chemistry, tradition looks at your birth day.
The short answer
People ask this question hoping for a ranked list of which signs are best in bed. Traditional astrology never wrote that list. What it has is a set of relationships between the twelve animals: who teams up, who pairs off, who collides. Matchmakers used those rules for marriage, and the modern after-dark reading borrows them.
So this guide gives you the real rules, with a wink. Nothing here is scientific. It is old theory, read for fun, and it stays suggestive on purpose.
Easy chemistry: teams and partner pairs
The four teams
The twelve animals split into four teams of three. Teammates are always four years apart. They are read as wanting the same things and moving at the same pace, which in this context means you find a rhythm without much negotiating.
| Team | Shared element |
|---|---|
| Rat, Dragon, Monkey | Water |
| Tiger, Horse, Dog | Fire |
| Snake, Rooster, Ox | Metal |
| Pig, Rabbit, Goat | Wood |
The six partner pairs
Each animal also has one secret partner. If teams are your friend group, this is the one person who simply gets you. These pairs are read as the most comfortable match of all.
- Rat and Ox
- Tiger and Pig
- Rabbit and Dog
- Dragon and Rooster
- Snake and Monkey
- Horse and Goat
Sparks and friction: clashes and grudges
Opposites, six years apart
Arrange the twelve animals in a circle and each one faces another directly across. Those pairs clash. Traditional readers warn about them, but opposite also means each has what the other lacks. In the after-dark reading a clash is high voltage: thrilling early, tiring if nobody learns to give way.
- Rat and Horse
- Ox and Goat
- Tiger and Monkey
- Rabbit and Rooster
- Dragon and Dog
- Snake and Pig
The grudge pairs
Korean readers single out six more pairs, called wonjin, where the trouble is quieter. No big fights, just a habit of feeling slighted over small things. The old memory tricks are animal stories: the Ox resents the Horse for not pulling its weight, and the Snake is startled by the Dog's barking.

- Tiger and Rooster
- Rabbit and Monkey
- Dragon and Pig

Peach blossom: the attraction marker
Each team has one animal assigned as its peach blossom. If that animal shows up elsewhere in your chart, you are said to carry peach blossom: the kind of charm that turns heads.
- Rat, Dragon, Monkey: the Rooster
- Tiger, Horse, Dog: the Rabbit
- Snake, Rooster, Ox: the Horse
- Pig, Rabbit, Goat: the Rat
It is a symbol of appeal and attention, nothing more. It says nothing about how a person behaves or whether they are faithful.
Why your zodiac year is not enough
Everyone born in the same year shares your sign, so one animal cannot say much about two specific people. In a full four-pillars chart your year animal is one of eight characters. For closeness, tradition looks hardest at the day you were born. The bottom character of the day pillar is even nicknamed the spouse seat, and the team, pair and clash rules above apply to it in exactly the same way.
One more catch: four-pillars readers usually change the year at the start of spring, around February 4, and not at Lunar New Year. If you were born in January or early February, your chart animal may be the previous year's. The step-by-step method is in BaZi compatibility, explained simply.
What the lab does with it
The chemistry test takes two birthdays and compares day elements, day animals, the five-element balance, zodiac years and birth months, in that order of importance. Your zodiac year counts, but less than your birth day. If your signs clash on paper, try the full version before you panic. The score is free, and the lab's interest in what happens after dark is well documented.
No birthday for the other person? If you came from his shared stat card, the lab can read the card instead. That odd corner of the building is explained in face reading and attraction. Strictly for fun, and strictly for adults.
Questions people ask
Which Chinese zodiac signs are most compatible?
Traditionally, signs in the same team of three (four years apart) and the six partner pairs, such as Rat and Ox or Horse and Goat, are read as the easiest matches.
Are clashing signs bad together?
Not automatically. A clash means two signs sit opposite each other, which is read as strong attraction with more friction. It is traditional theory, not a prediction.
Does my zodiac sign change if I was born in January?
It can. Four-pillars readers usually start the year around February 4, at the start of spring. If you were born before that, your chart uses the previous year's animal.
