BaZi Compatibility, Explained Simply
BaZi compatibility in plain English: what the day master is, which pairs attract or clash, and how the five elements balance two charts. Just for fun.
Last updated: Oct 8, 2026
The short version
- BaZi (called saju in Korea) builds a chart from your birth year, month, day and hour.
- Compatibility starts with the day master: the element of the day you were born.
- After that come the day animal, the five-element balance of both charts, and only then the zodiac year.
What BaZi actually is
BaZi means eight characters. It is the Chinese name for the four pillars of destiny, the same system Koreans call saju. Your birth year, month, day and hour each become a pillar, and every pillar has two characters: a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below. Four pillars, two characters each, eight in total.
The stems come in ten flavors: the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), each in a yang and a yin version. The branches are the twelve zodiac animals. So when a reader says you are Yin Fire over Rabbit, they are just naming one pillar.
If you only know your zodiac year, you know one of your eight characters. BaZi compatibility is what happens when you lay all of them next to someone else's.
Step one: find the day master
The top character of your day pillar is called the day master. Traditional readers treat it as you, and read the other seven characters as your surroundings. That is why compatibility starts here: before anything else, you check how the two lead characters get along.
| Element | Yang version | Yin version |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | A tall tree | Vines and grass |
| Fire | The midday sun | A candle flame |
| Earth | A mountain | Garden soil |
| Metal | Raw iron | A cut gem |
| Water | A wide river | Light rain |
These images are the classic shorthand, not personality science. You can find your day master with any four-pillars calculator, or skip the lookup and let the lab's chemistry test work it out from two birthdays.
Step two: how two day masters meet
Put two day masters side by side and you get one of five relationships. From most to least favorable in traditional matchmaking:
- Combine: five special pairs that pull together like magnets. Yang Wood with Yin Earth, Yin Wood with Yang Metal, Yang Fire with Yin Metal, Yin Fire with Yang Water, Yang Earth with Yin Water.
- Feed: one element nourishes the other. Wood feeds Fire, Fire feeds Earth, Earth feeds Metal, Metal feeds Water, Water feeds Wood. One of you gives, one of you receives.
- Same element: two Woods, two Waters. Easy company, best-friend energy.
- Check: one element restrains the other. Wood checks Earth, Earth checks Water, Water checks Fire, Fire checks Metal, Metal checks Wood. Someone ends up holding the reins.
- Clash: four head-on pairs. Yang Wood against Yang Metal, Yin Wood against Yin Metal, Yang Fire against Yang Water, Yin Fire against Yin Water. Strong pull, strong friction.
So are fire and water doomed?
Not necessarily. Water does check Fire, but look at the lists again. Yin Fire and Yang Water are one of the five combining pairs, while Yang Fire and Yang Water clash. Same two elements, opposite verdicts. That is the first thing BaZi adds that a simple element quiz cannot.

Step three: the day animal
The bottom character of the day pillar is traditionally called the spouse seat. It describes what happens up close rather than at first sight. Readers compare the two day animals with the same rules people use for zodiac years: partner pairs and three-animal teams are easy, opposite animals clash.
The full list of which animals team up and which collide is in our zodiac compatibility guide. The rules are identical. The only difference is that the day animal carries far more weight than the year animal everyone knows.
Step four: balance across both charts
Finally, pool all the characters from both charts and count the elements. The traditional ideal is a couple who cover all five between them without piling up on one. If your chart has no Water at all and your partner is full of it, that reads as filling each other's gaps.
There is also a temperature reading. Wood and Fire run warm, Metal and Water run cool. A warm chart and a cool chart are said to even each other out, which is the part people ask about when they mean chemistry after dark.
How the lab scores it
The chemistry test follows the same order. The day-master relationship counts most, then the day animals, then the five-element balance, then the zodiac years, then the birth months. Birth time is optional: without it the lab reads three pillars instead of four.
No names are asked, and the score with the first part of the reading is free. One caveat: the lab adds a second ingredient, a face-reading stat card, which you can read about in face reading and attraction. All of it is traditional theory turned into a game. It has no scientific backing, so treat the result as a conversation starter and not a verdict. Adults only.
Questions people ask
Is BaZi the same as the Chinese zodiac?
The zodiac animal of your birth year is one of the eight characters in a BaZi chart. BaZi also uses your birth month, day and hour, so two people born in the same year can have very different charts.
Do I need my birth time for BaZi compatibility?
No. The day pillar matters most for compatibility, and it only needs your birth date. Without a birth time the reading uses three pillars instead of four.
Does a clash mean we are incompatible?
No. A clash is a traditional way of saying two characters pull in opposite directions. Other parts of the chart can soften it, and none of this is scientifically validated. It is for fun.
